Finding Balance: My Journey Through Overwork, FND, and Rediscovery

Introduction

Life as a veterinary practice manager and business leader is exhilarating—until it isn’t. I once wore many hats, managing three businesses for a Principal Veterinarian while running an animal clinic and hospital. In the whirlwind of deadlines, meetings, and responsibilities, I pushed myself to the brink. This is the story of how overwork led me to an unexpected diagnosis, taught me invaluable lessons about self-care, and ultimately reshaped my approach to both life and business.

The Breaking Point

I vividly remember the day when my body simply couldn’t keep up anymore. I experienced seizure-like muscle contractions that left me immobilized and eventually confined to a wheelchair. What followed was a series of extensive tests and consultations—a time filled with uncertainty and vulnerability. The diagnosis was Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), a condition that, despite being real and impactful, many still struggle to understand.

FND is a recognized neurological condition where patients experience genuine physical symptoms—like muscle weakness and involuntary movements—without a clear structural cause. While it can be perplexing, my diagnosis was a wake-up call: my relentless drive had compromised my health.

Lessons Learned: The Value of Self-Care

This challenging experience forced me to reassess my life priorities. Here are a few lessons I learned along the way:

  1. Listen to Your Body:
My body was sending me signals long before I noticed the crisis. Recognizing and addressing stress and fatigue is crucial to prevent burnout.
  2. Embrace Vulnerability:
Sharing my story wasn’t easy, but vulnerability can lead to genuine connection and understanding. It’s okay to seek help when you need it.
  3. Prioritize Balance:
Success isn’t only measured by professional achievements but also by personal well-being. I’ve learned to set boundaries and ensure that my work supports, rather than consumes, my life.
  4. Redefine Success:
My experience with FND has reshaped my definition of success. Now, it’s about sustainable growth, compassion for myself, and a commitment to a balanced life.
